I hate to think that I was downplaying the number of women who like superheroes, though I guess I was downplaying the number who like superhero comics. However, I do think—going by the women whose art I love and are growing in popularity and recognition—that female artists are less likely to find their inspiration for their own styles in superhero comics.
And this (by which I mean the complete response, not simply the bit excerpted here) is certainly a fair point. I think I’m sensitive enough to dismissals of women who read superhero titles that I’m rather primed to read for it in discussions that touch on female readers of comics — and to be fair, your discussion thread is about female creators of comics and their influences, not really about female fans; I was perhaps taking the discussion a bit afield from where it actually was. Your point about female creators having influences outside of superhero comics is well taken.
(On a sidenote, “superhero comics” is more specifically what I meant by superheroes in this case, apologies for the inexact wording.)
